Abstract

Samuel Scott - SEO and Internet marketing speaker  used to raise his view on the Art of Public Speaking “At any serious conference, hard skills and knowledge among the speakers are absolutely necessary first and foremost. But soft skills and the ability to amaze an audience are a very close second.”

As far as soft skills in public speaking is in concern, there has been an encouragement for students to improve some relevant skills, such as critical thinking, mind-map designing, problem-solving skill, credibility, background knowledge, and so on. As usual,  one of the most common problems among students is that after getting the speaking topic, it is common for them to brainstorm a very general outline which is not appropriate to the certain context. Actually, the ideas are often taken from Google search or a very common belief. Therefore, the speech cannot be strong enough to attract or persuade the audience since they can not find their own problems analyzed, clarified and solved in a satisfying way. During the 2 recent school years, the alarming results of Public speaking final results have left a significant consideration on the change of teaching method to help improve this speaking skill as its effects are believed to be taken account to the future when students will be in the interview for job application.

The research focuses on the analysis of the current problems among students studying Public Speaking, and the suggestion of using the Internet to improve both soft skills and background knowledge which are believed to be simultaneously beneficial to reading, writing and listening skills. In order to keep the students on track of self-improvement, the support of the university library, the Faculty of foreign languages and especially teachers who are directly side by side on their progress is highly appreciated.

Abstract 

Thanks to a lot of benefits brought by the Multimedia Room, the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​of Van Lang University has introduced a new subject, Phonetics in the curriculum with the aim of helping freshmen, majoring in English of Van Lang University to improve their pronunciation skills. With different appropriate teaching methods used for this subject in the Multimedia Rooms after over four years, we have had tons of positive results and practical experience in teaching pronunciation for students. Nevertheless, we have also recognized some merits and drawbacks of those teaching methods so as to improve our students’ pronunciation skills after finishing each semester.

Understanding the importance and effectiveness of learning English pronunciation in the Multimedia Room, we decide to conduct an article entitled “Some New Teaching Methods for Learners’ English Pronunciation Improvement in Multimedia Room.” In this paper, we would like to come up with and discuss some new teaching methods in order to bring more benefits and effectiveness to freshmen at the course 22 when they are learning English pronunciation in the first and second semester.
