FOLA kicks off Online Speaking Clubs

On the 12th of December, the Faculty of Foreign languages went live their First-Of-The-Series of Online English Speaking activities with 66 amazing active participants who joined the jam-packed Sunday morning event.

The event aims to share an open and healthy space for students to freely express their critical thoughts, and burning feelings regarding some practical, relevant, and timely societal issues, hoping that this extra-curricular activity could be helpful in their university life, and the future ahead of them.

Mr. Jonathan, JON, as everybody fondly calls him, a full-time foreign lecturer of the department, facilitated the event focused on the topic " Beating Procrastination: Time Management and Productivity. "

The online event was divided into three parts: The first part invited the students to a 'free task" where they were asked to do what they want for 5 and 15 minutes respectively. This prompted each of them to be reflective on how they make use of their time both in short and a long period in a day. Meanwhile, the 2nd and 3rd part focused on group sharing regarding their 'good practices" on managing time, identifying their own "distractors", and sharing "practical tips" to be more productive.

On Sharing Thoughts

The Vice Dean of the department, Ms. Le Thi Ngoc Diep, graced the event where she gave her insights on the importance of time management and how this can affect the students' future career. While she greatly appreciate and acknowledged the individual differences of each student, she emphasized however the contribution of Emotional Quotient ( EQ) of each person; that emotions, and the formation of good habits in the university are necessary, beneficial, and practical, thus leadiing to an even successful career.

On Valuing

Not only does this event allow students to collaborate and actively engage with other members of the department, the speaker, Mr. Jon himself, invited the students for a take-home reflection as follows:

  •  What are the factors why I procrastinate?
  •  What could be the better way for me to plan my schedule?
  •  What are the doable steps for me to manage my time?
  •  Why is time important to me?

"Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort." Paul J.Meyer
